  1. Peace Officer Memorial Week.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. As this week begins this year on Sunday May 14th and ends Saturday, May 20th. I urge all citizens to be mindful of the sacrifice so many have made to ensure that our community remains safe. At Noon on Monday, May 15th, please stop and have a moment of silence for those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
In 2016, law enforcement fatalities nationwide rose to their highest level in five years in 2016, with 135 officers killed in the line of duty, according to preliminary data compiled and released by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) in their 2016 Law Enforcement Fatalities Report. The 135 officer fatalities in 2016 are a 10 percent increase over the 123 who died in the line of duty last year and is the highest total since 2011 when 177 officers made the ultimate sacrifice.
There are currently 20,789 names of officers killed in the line of duty inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, dating back to the first known death in 1791.
Locally in the State of MS, we have lost 256 Officer since 1888. The first officer in Meridian was James Madison Collins October 28, 1888. He was shot during a gambling raid , Eugene L. She was shot with her own weapon while on a domestic violence call.
Mississippi Fraternal Order of Police has placed the First Law Enforcement Memorial located at the Jim Buck Ross Agriculture Museum, 1150 Lakeland Drive, Jackson MS. 15 years ago. This monument was placed in remembrance of all of the officers in the State Of Mississippi that have lost their life in the line of duty. The State of Mississippi has also placed one in Jackson, MS. Located at Gartin Justice Building in downtown Jackson.
Please keep all officers and their families in your prayers and offer support when you can. It’s a job that is mostly thankless, unless you need them. They have to work with thousands of rules, guidelines and knowledge of proper procedure so that the guilty can be successfully prosecuted and in the words of Paul Harvey, “They will have to be a genius, because they have to feed their family on a policeman’s salary.”.
Thanks to all that show support as we have a wonderful business community and citizens that support our local Police and Sheriff’s Department. That’s what makes a safe Community….
Keith McCary – Retired Asst Chief of Police – Meridian PD and State President of the Mississippi Fraternal Order of Police.
